Staying Active with your Siberian Husky

Before we made the Siberian Husky a family pet, living in many different homes ranging from small apartments to acres of land to roam around on, the Siberian Husky ate, slept, played and worked outside. They were bred withstand -60 degrees in temperature, run 100 miles or more a day, think independently which has been documented where they have saved mushers lives because they do and they love to do so. So when we, yes us, the humans who made the Siberian Husky house pets, expecting them to become couch potatoes while we are away whether at school, work or even out shopping for groceries, come home to find our Siberian Husky has destroyed something, who's fault is it? When we don't give our huskies enough to do, by not providing activities for them and are not active enough with them, they can develop destructive behaviors. Such as:
Destructive Chewing
Scratching & Digging
Investigative behaviors like garbage raiding
Unruliness & Hyperactivity
Excessive predatory & social play (biting and playing too rough)
Barking & whining
Staying active with your Siberian Husky will not only promote a healthy lifestyle for you and your husky, but also keep both you and your husky happy.
Exercising your Siberian Husky
Exercising your Siberian Husky is a great way to keep them from not only getting overweight which can cause health issues later on in life such as Hip Dysplasia, but also help burn up that energy that can create destructive behaviors when they get bored. It can also make fearful dogs more confident and prevent digestive problems such as constipation. And this can be done in many different ways, but it's up to you to decide which will work best for you and your husky.
Here are some examples of how you can exercise your husky are:

There are so many ways you can stay active with your Siberian Husky. Some people will even grab their skate board or put on their roller blades to take their huskies for a run! But if you have a day where you can't get your husky out for a walk or run before you leave, play fetch with them for a good 15-20 minutes while you have your first cup of coffee to help burn up some of their energy and then leave them something to do (future blog on that to come), to help exercise their brain while you're away. Taking your husky for a long walk in the morning before you head off to work is a good way to burn up some energy before you leave them home alone for the day and prevent destructive behaviors from developing. But sometimes taking your husky for a walk may not be enough exercise for them. And that's when you can look into other options as well, such as Canicross, Bikejoring and Mushing. This is why it's important to know, before you bring a Siberian Husky into your life, that you have time to dedicate to your husky for exercise and figure out what forms of exercise will work best for you both. Otherwise you could end up with a Siberian Husky that is tearing apart your home while you're away. They don't destroy things to get back at you for leaving them, they destroy things when they have too much energy and are bored. I have even ended up with a hole in my wall, yes, you read that right, a HOLE....IN MY WALL.....lol, because I was running behind one morning and not only did I not give my husky puppy enough time to burn up some energy, but I didn't leave her with anything to do while I away, nor did I put her in her crate. So the hole in my wall is no ones fault other than my own. I knew it could happen and I knew why it happened, but I didn't take the measures to help prevent it from happening. We, yes us humans, changed the Siberian Huskies environment and up to us to make up for those changes. And when we do, having a Siberian Husky as a companion can be a rewarding experience.
